    A cholera epidemic spread through Madeira from October 1910 to February 1911, the first case occurring near the Paiol on 20 October; Dr Carlos França came to Funchal to direct the fight against it, and the epidemic prompted the idea of an orphan asylum.

    The Portuguese Republic was proclaimed in Lisbon; Madeira adhered at once, the monarchist parties disappeared and the parliament elected in August never met.

    Dr Manuel Augusto Martins was appointed civil governor of Madeira by the Republican provisional government and took office on 6 October, when the republican flag was raised at São Lourenço.

    Infantry Regiment no. 27 left barracks without orders and marched through Funchal in support of the Republic.
