He is the brother of the preceding subject and was born in Funchal on 3 March 1883. In 1892 he began studying drawing at the Funchal Industrial School (Escola Industrial do Funchal), and then went to Lisbon to enrol at what was then the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Academia Real de Belas-Artes). There he completed his course in history painting under the eminent painter Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro in 1911. During his studies he won several bronze and silver medals, honourable mentions and the ‘Lupi’ and ‘Anunciação’ prizes.
In 1910 he exhibited for the first time at the National Society of Fine Arts (Sociedade Nacional de Belas-Artes), showing three paintings and five drawings, and on that occasion was awarded 2nd- and 3rd-class medals in painting and drawing. In 1911 he exhibited seven paintings and three drawings, and the State then acquired his painting Outros Tempos for the Museum of Contemporary Art (Museu de Arte Contemporânea). In 1912 he passed the competition for the Valmor Grant (Pensão Valmor) for artists to study abroad, leaving that same year for Madrid and later settling in Paris, where he painted Ar livre as proof of his progress abroad.
He returned to his native island in 1914, where he has continued to display his remarkable artistic gifts in many works of merit (1921).
