Brown (A. Samler)
A. Samler Brown was the English author of a widely used tourist and invalid guide to Madeira, the Canaries and the Azores, first published in 1889.
Works: Madeira, Canary Islands and Açores, a pratical and complete guide for the use of tourists and invalids, London).
This guide, one of the most accomplished ever published, contains a wealth of useful information not only on the history, geology, climate, etc. of the main islands of the archipelagos of Madeira, the Canary Islands and the Azores, but also on the places in those islands most worth visiting by foreigners. The 100th edition, published in 1910, contains 20 maps and plans and a greater abundance of useful information than the earlier editions.
Only from 1901 onwards did Mr Samler Brown begin to deal with the islands of the Azores, the work having first appeared in 1889 under the following title: Madeira and Canary Islands, etc. (London).
