Rua do Príncipe was the former name of a Funchal street running alongside the Ribeira de Santa Luzia, from the Calçada do Cidrão to the Rua dos Netos. It was renamed Rua 5 de Outubro after the proclamation of the Republic. The name probably honoured the Prince Regent D. João VI, though no municipal record confirms this; the street lay at the other end of the present rua and calçada da Saúde.
