Madeiran priest (1836–1897), long-serving parish priest of Machico, journalist and author of several pamphlets.
He was born in Funchal on 18 May 1836 and died in the parish (freguesia) of Machico on 3 November 1897. He studied at the lyceum (state secondary school) and the seminary of this city, and was ordained priest on 16 September 1860. He held ecclesiastical posts in various parishes of this diocese, especially in the parish of Machico, where he was parish priest for many years. He was a highly intelligent man of wide learning, and also an exemplary priest of impeccably austere character.
He contributed extensively to several periodicals, notably the former Jornal Verdade. He published the pamphlets O Domingo, a Fé, Funchal, 1895, 55 pp.; Excursões na Madeira, Funchal, 1891, 106 pp.; and Um monumento Histórico, Funchal, 1886, 27 pp.

The capital of the archipelago and seat of the principal captaincy, where settlement began; it was made a vila c.1451–52. Its bay, the widest in the archipelago, lies between Ponta do Garajau and Ponta da Cruz and offers sheltered anchorage, though its harbour had never been studied oceanographically.
