List of the principal headlands (pontas) of Madeira, Porto Santo and the Desertas, grouped by municipality.
The principal headlands are:
- São Lourenço, in the municipality (concelho) of Machico, which includes several secondary points, such as Furado, Abra, Dedais, Rosto, etc.
- Queimada, in the same municipality
- Santa Catarina, Guindaste, Atalaia and Oliveira, in the municipality of Santa Cruz
- Cruz, in the municipality of Funchal
- Água, in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos (‘seals’ den’)
- Sol, in the municipality of Ponta do Sol (‘point of the sun’)
- Galé and Pargo, in the municipality of Calheta (‘small cove’)
- Tristão, in the municipality of Porto Moniz (‘Moniz’s harbour’)
- Delgada, in the municipality of São Vicente
- and São Jorge, Santana and Cortado, in the municipality of Santana (see those entries).
The principal headlands of the island of Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’) are: Incão, Frades, Branca, Cruz, Varadouros, Furado and Calheta (see Porto Santo).
In the Desertas (‘deserted islands’), the following deserve mention: Ponta da Agulha, on Bugio, and Boqueirão, Pedregal, Norte and Rocha Negra, on Deserta Grande (see the Desertas and Cabos).

- Bugio
Santa Cruz · Desertas. Desertas island with the Ponta da Agulha.
Bugio is the southernmost of the three Desertas islands: high (411 m), waterless and uninhabited, with good pasture and the rare plant Chrysanthemum haematomma. The Elucidário notes the Porto da Alagoa, the Ponta da Agulha, sub-fossil snail deposits on its summit and its private ownership in the nineteenth century.
- Deserta Grande
Santa Cruz · Desertas. Largest Desertas island, with several headlands.
The largest island of the Desertas, 490 m high, seasonally visited by hunters, fishers and orchil gatherers. The steamer Lagos ran aground there in 1902, and it was visited by the Prince of Monaco in 1888 and by the Dana scientists. Its landing at Carga da Lapa is 21.5 miles from Funchal.
- Ponta Branca
Porto Santo. Headland of Porto Santo.
Headland of Porto Santo, also called Ponta do Nordeste. It faces the Rocha do Pescador shoal, and the Ilhéu das Cenouras lies nearby.

Machico. Secondary point of São Lourenço.
Ponta da Abra is a headland in the municipality of Machico, Madeira. It bounds the bay of Abra to the west and is recorded as a secondary point of São Lourenço.
- Ponta da Agulha
Santa Cruz · Desertas. Headland on Bugio.
Ponta da Agulha, at the southern tip of Bugio, is the southernmost point of the Madeira archipelago. It is used as a distance reference, for example in relation to the Selvagens.
- Ponta da Atalaia
Santa Cruz. Headland in Santa Cruz.
A headland at the sítio of Atalaia in Caniço parish, lying between the Oliveira and Guindaste points. It stands above a small landing of the same name.
- Ponta da Calheta
Porto Santo. Headland of Porto Santo.
Ponta da Calheta is a headland on Porto Santo, next to the locality and small beach of Calheta. Miocene shells and corals occur in its volcanic rock.
- Ponta da Cruz
Funchal. Headland in Funchal.
This Ponta da Cruz is a headland in São Martinho regarded as the western limit of Funchal bay. It was once the site of a small redoubt and lies near a fish-canning factory.
- Ponta da Galé
Calheta. Headland in Calheta.
Ponta da Galé, also called Galera, is a small coastal headland in Calheta near the São Bartolomeu landing place. It lies between the mouths of the São Bartolomeu and Funda streams.
- Ponta da Oliveira
Santa Cruz. Headland in Santa Cruz.
Ponta da Oliveira is a headland on the coast of Caniço, Madeira, named after an olive stake planted there as a boundary marker. It was the southern end of the line dividing the captaincies of Funchal and Machico and the southern limit of the original Funchal municipality. It has a small landing place, with a landing stage built in 1909.
