A settlement founded by royal decree (alvará régio) of 18 December 1768 in the parish (freguesia) of Santo da Serra (‘the saint of the uplands’), made up of several couples from the island of Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’) who moved there and to whom the government in mainland Portugal granted various privileges. This new settlement, however, did not last long.
