Nova de Santa Maria (street)
Original title: Nova de Santa Maria (Rua)
Funchal street opened after the 1803 flood, parallel to Rua de Santa Maria, now named Latino Coelho.
Roughly parallel to Rua de Santa Maria (‘St Mary’), and a short distance from it, runs Rua Nova de Santa Maria (‘new street of St Mary’), which was opened shortly after the flash flood (aluvião) of 1803; until then there was only a small alley there. Between the entrances of these two streets stood the church of Our Lady of Calhau (Nossa Senhora do Calhau), or of St Mary, which gave its name to both streets. It runs from the bank of the Ribeira de João Gomes to the Largo das Bicas or Torneiras, where Rua Bela de São Tiago begins. Today it bears the name of Latino Coelho.

Chronology
- The great flood of 9 October 1803, considered Madeira's greatest calamity, devastated Funchal and other parts of the island, killing about 600 people and destroying the Calhau church, stream walls, bridges and chapels in Machico, Santa Cruz and elsewhere. It prompted Oudinot's mission and the city's spread outwards.
