Wuellerstorf-Urbair (Commodore)
Original title: Wuellerstorf-Urbair (Comodoro)
Commodore Wuellerstorf-Urbair commanded the Austrian frigate Novara on its round-the-world voyage of 1857–59. His account of the voyage praises Madeira, where the ship stayed in June 1857, and this chapter was translated into Portuguese twice.
He commanded the Austrian frigate Novara, which made a voyage round the world in 1857, 1858 and 1859. The work entitled Reise der Oesterreichischen Fregatte Novara um die Erde (Vienna, 1861) contains a chapter in which Commodore Bernhard von Wüllerstorf-Urbair pays the well-deserved tribute of his admiration to the island of Madeira, where he stayed from 8 to 17 June 1857. The part of this chapter concerning our island was translated by João Félix Pereira and published in Lampada (nos 25 to 37, from 31 May to 10 September 1873). There is also a translation by the illustrious writer José Maria Latino Coelho, which appeared in the Revista Contemporânea and was reprinted in nos 2279 ff. of the now defunct Diário do Comércio (‘Commercial Daily’) of Funchal.
