Novara (frigate)

Original title: Novara (Fragata)

Austrian frigate that called at Funchal during its 1857–59 circumnavigation; its account of Madeira was translated by Latino Coelho.

This warship of the Austrian navy made a voyage of circumnavigation in the years 1857 to 1859, and lay at anchor in our harbour for several days. The account of this voyage is highly regarded. Latino Coelho translated and published in the Revista Contemporânea the part of it dealing with this island, which is very interesting and well worth reading. It was reprinted in no. 2,279 and following of the now defunct Diário do Commercio (‘Commercial Daily’) of this city.
