Lavradores (Largo or Praça dos)
Original title: Lavradores (Largo ou Praça dos)
A square in Funchal on the left bank of the João Gomes stream, formerly the site of a Saturday fair selling poles and stakes for vine trellises, and home to the main entrance of the Mercado dos Lavradores, opened in 1939.
This square (largo) lies on the left bank of the Ribeira de João Gomes, as a continuation of Rua da Infância and Rua Oudinot, both of which open into it. It also gives access to Rua do Hospital Velho. Every Saturday a fair used to be held in this square for the sale of pine poles and chestnut stakes, used for the vine trellises known in Madeira as ‘corredores’. The square is also the site of the main entrance to the city’s large market, known as the Farmers' Market (Mercado dos Lavradores), which was opened in 1939.
