Casa dos Cônsules
Original title: Casa dos Consules
An 18th-century town house in Funchal at the corner of Rua da Conceição and Rua da Figueira Preta, named after the consulates once housed there and admired for its architecture.
An urban building on Rua da Conceição (‘Conception’), at the corner of Rua da Figueira Preta (‘black fig-tree street’), was long known as the Casa dos Cônsules (‘consuls’ house’). It seems to have been an old manor house. It dates from the 18th century and has a certain architectural grandeur. In the past various consulates were housed there, hence the name Casa dos Cônsules. Even at the beginning of the 19th century some consulates still had their seat in this house.
We read in the valuable book Casas Madeirenses: ‘It is a most interesting example, worth considering for the originality of certain elements well worthy of being adopted, for greater variety, in the design of other buildings. An asymmetrical but balanced and noble whole, with a grand, lordly air. It has a broad triple eave, and the upper windows are highly original in the shape of the pediments that crown their lintels’.
