House of the Destitute Poor

A private asylum for poor men and women founded and run by José Fernandes Velosa, which began as a night shelter in 1895.
It was a private asylum, run by its founder, José Fernandes Velosa. Its purpose was to take in and support a certain number of poor people of both sexes, and it existed from 1897; alms, legacies and the proceeds of certain festivities were its main sources of income.
The establishment, which at first admitted only men, began in 1895 under the name ‘Albergue Nocturno’ (Night Shelter). The first poor man to whom Mr Velosa gave protection was taken in by him at his own house one night in December 1894. Its founder died on 30 January 1934.
