Quinta do Leme
Inhabited locality in Santo António parish, Funchal, seat of the Leme entailed estate with a manor house and the chapel of São Filipe.
An inhabited locality (sítio) in the parish (freguesia) of Santo António (‘St Anthony’), Funchal. It has an old manor house with an adjoining chapel, which were the seat of the entailed estate (morgadio) of the Leme family, founded by Pedro de Leme before 1550. Its last direct representative was Francisco Aurélio da Câmara, who died without issue, so the administration of this entailed house (casa vinculada) passed to his nephew João de Carvalhal Esmeraldo, 1st Count of Carvalhal (‘oak grove’). The chapel, dedicated to the martyr St Philip, was built in 1536 by António de Leme and rebuilt in 1654 by Inácio da Câmara Leme. It was reconstructed once more in 1752, together with the adjoining manor house, because of the state of great ruin in which the earthquake of 1748 had left it. Having been deconsecrated for some years, it was restored to worship in 1942.
