Pico dos Barcelos
A viewpoint hill in Santo António parish overlooking Funchal, where a commemorative cross was inaugurated in 1941.
As already mentioned (I.127), this hill in the parish (freguesia) of Santo António is a favourite place for visitors to go, because of the astonishing panorama it offers over the whole amphitheatre of Funchal. As a commemorative pillar (padrão) of the centenary celebrations of the Independence and Restoration of Portugal, the society ‘Juventude Antoniana’ of this parish had an attractive monumental cross erected on the spot. It was solemnly inaugurated in 1941 and has become a further attraction for visiting the site, which is linked to the city centre by an excellent and busy road.
