Original title: Barcelos. (Pico dos)

Inhabited locality and small hill in Santo António parish, Funchal, famous as a viewpoint over the bay from Garajau to Cabo Girão. The name probably comes from the early settler Diogo Barcelos.

An inhabited locality (sítio) in the parish (freguesia) of Santo António, Funchal. On it stands a small hill known by the same name, which is today an obligatory attraction for every tourist visiting Madeira. The land stretching far from Ponta do Garajau (‘tern point’) to Cabo Girão forms a vast semicircle, and at the centre of its diameter rises the eminence of Pico dos Barcelos (‘the Barcelos’ peak’). From this point one of the most attractive and beautiful panoramas that could perhaps be offered to the eyes of any visitor can be enjoyed. The road leading there, built in 1917, makes the spot easy to reach, and it is frequented almost at all hours by countless visitors, Portuguese and foreign. It seems that this locality took its name from Diogo Barcelos, one of the early settlers, who owned several tracts of land in the area.
