Quinta do Monte
Luxurious estate at Pico, Monte parish, also called Quinta Cossart, where the exiled Emperor Charles of Austria died on 1 April 1922.
In the locality (sítio) of Pico, in the parish (freguesia) of Nossa Senhora do Monte (‘Our Lady of the Mount’), stands the quinta (country estate) of this name, also known as Quinta Cossart. It is one of the most sumptuous residences in Madeira, and we have already given a brief account of it on page 461 of volume II of this Elucidário.
It became very well known, and has been much visited, since the time when Emperor Charles I lived there for some months and ended his days there on 1 April 1922. A few years ago its present owner, Luís da Rocha Machado, built in the house a beautiful chapel dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Sagrado Coração de Jesus) and consecrated to the memory of the ill-fated and much-missed emperor. He had arrived in Madeira with his wife, Empress Zita, aboard the British cruiser Cardiff on 10 November 1921, and took up residence at the ‘Vila Vitória’, an annexe of Reid’s Hotels. When the princes, the imperial couple’s children, arrived in Funchal on 2 February 1922, the whole imperial family moved to the Quinta do Monte (‘estate of Monte’) on the 18th of the same month. There, as already stated, the unfortunate emperor died on 1 April of that year. On the 5th he was buried in a side chapel of the Igreja Paroquial (‘parish church’) of Monte, where his remains still lie. The emperor’s death and funeral stirred the deepest feelings of grief throughout the population of Funchal, which took on the character of true national mourning. Empress Zita left Madeira with her children on 19 May 1922.
