Jesus (Friar Rafael de)
Original title: Jesus (Fr. Rafael de)
Portuguese friar and writer (1614–1693) whose 'Castrioto Lusitano' (1679) recounts the life and deeds of the Madeiran João Fernandes Vieira in the restoration of Pernambuco.
He was born in 1614 and died in 1693. Despite his shortcomings as a man of letters and as a historian, he enjoyed renown in his day. Among other works, he wrote one that concerns the history of this archipelago and that ran to two editions. The 1st edition is entitled: Castrioto Lusitano. Entrepresa e restauração de Pernambuco e das capitanias confinantes. Vários e bellicos successos entre portuguezes e belgas, acontecidos pelo decurso de 24 anos, tirados de noticias, relações e memórias certas. Oferecidos a João Fernandes Vieira, Castrioto Lusitano; Lisbon, 1679. It describes the life and heroic deeds of the illustrious Madeiran João Fernandes Vieira, whom we have already discussed in this Elucidário.
