Vaz
Madeiran priest and local historian (b. 1884), parish priest of Porto da Cruz, who found the baptismal record of João Fernandes Vieira in Faial.
(Father Fernando Carlos de Meneses). He was born in the parish (freguesia) of Santana (‘St Anne’) on 1 February 1884. He studied at the seminary (Seminário) of this diocese and was ordained priest in 1909. He is at present parish priest of the parish of Porto da Cruz (‘harbour of the cross’). In the Correio da Madeira (‘Madeira Courier’) he published some well-crafted articles containing historical information on several parishes in the north of this island. In the parish archive of Faial he recently discovered the birth record of the illustrious Madeiran João Fernandes Vieira, whose native parish had until then been unknown, despite the painstaking research carried out to that end (1921).
Father Fernando Vaz, who devotes his leisure to various genealogical studies intended for publication, is the grandson of the distinguished Madeiran genealogist João Agostinho Pereira de Agrela (vol. I, p. 20 and vol. II, p. 435).

Faial is a north-coast parish of Santana municipality created in 1550, whose mountain springs feed the Levada da Serra. It contains Chícharos and the Diferença chapel, owns the eastern part of Pico Ruivo, and is noted for cheese-making and columnar basalt.
