Felner (Rodrigo José de Lima)
Rodrigo José de Lima Felner, writer and academic whose 1873 memoir first proved that João Fernandes Vieira was born Francisco de Ornelas Moniz; he died in Lisbon in 1877.
We owe to this well-known writer and academic the memoir Nome verdadeiro do portuguez João Fernandes Vieira, published in 1873. In it he stated and proved for the first time that the illustrious Madeiran João Fernandes Vieira (see that entry), on leaving this island in 1624, exchanged the name Francisco de Ornelas Moniz for the one he adopted and used until his death. Lima Felner died in Lisbon in November 1877.
