In 1658 the merchant Domingos Rodrigues, a native of Guimarães, built the chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Nossa Senhora do Carmo) on the quinta (country estate) he owned in the parish (freguesia) of Campanário (‘bell tower’).
