An inhabited locality (sítio) in the parish (freguesia) of Ponta do Sol (‘point of the sun’). It contains the chapel of St John the Baptist (São João), which gave the place its name.

Neither the year of its original construction nor the identity of its founder is known. It was an entailed foundation (instituição vincular, a morgado or capela) and belonged to Diogo Berenguer de França, holder of the entail (morgado), who in 1871 was granted the title of Viscount of São João, taken from this locality.
