Our Lady of Good Success (chapels)
Original title: Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso (Capelas de)
Describes three chapels of Our Lady of Good Success: one at Garachico straddling the boundary of Câmara de Lobos and Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, one at Lombo da Estrela in Calheta (1683), and one on the Caminho do Meio in Funchal owned by the municipal council.
At the far western edge of the parishes (freguesias) of Câmara de Lobos (‘seals’ den’) and Estreito de Câmara de Lobos (‘the narrows of Câmara de Lobos’), in the locality (sítio) of Garachico, stands the chapel of Our Lady of Good Success (Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso), which is considered to belong to the latter of these parishes. The chapel had the peculiarity that its altar stood within the boundaries of one of these parishes while its door opened onto land of the other, neighbouring parish. It seems that in times more remote from ours doubts arose as to which parish the chapel should belong to, and there were even conflicts of jurisdiction between the respective parish priests. It was built in the early 17th century by Manuel João Ferreira, especially so that his son, Father Francisco Luís Ferreira, could say Mass in it. Some years ago it was enlarged by the inhabitants of the village (lugar, settlement rank below a town).
There is also a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Good Success in the locality of Lombo da Estrela (‘ridge of the star’), in the parish of Calheta (‘small cove’), founded in 1683 by Lourenço da Costa. In the parish of Santa Maria Maior (‘St Mary Major’), beside the road known as Caminho do Meio (‘middle road’), stands another chapel of the same dedication, which belongs to the Funchal Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal do Funchal), as does the adjoining house, where a state school is housed. We do not know the name of the founder of this last chapel, nor the year in which it was acquired by the Funchal Council.
