Magi (chapel)
Original title: Reis Magos (Capela dos)
Describes two old chapels dedicated to the Three Kings (Reis Magos): one at Lombo dos Reis in Estreito da Calheta, founded around 1529 as the seat of an entailed estate, and one in Ponta Delgada that belonged to the Carvalhal family.
At Lombo dos Reis (‘kings’ ridge’), in the parish (freguesia) of Estreito da Calheta (‘small cove’), stands the old chapel of the Magi (Reis Magos). It was founded around 1529 by Francisco Homem de Gouveia and his wife, Dona Isabel Afonso, who made it the seat of an entailed estate (morgadio). This chapel and the entailed foundation (instituição vincular, a morgado or capela) attached to it were discussed at length in an article published in the Brado d'Oeste (‘Cry from the West’) of 2 September 1916. There is also a chapel dedicated to the Magi in the parish of Ponta Delgada (‘slender point’), which belonged to the house of Carvalhal (‘oak grove’). It is of very old construction, for a document of 1577 states that it was already in a poor state of repair at that time. It was rebuilt in 1778 by João de Carvalhal Esmeraldo e Câmara, administrator of the entail to which it belonged. A few years ago it was restored once more, and today it is the property of João Fidélio de Canha.
