Magi (chapel)

Two chapels of the Holy Kings: one near the old Misericórdia hospital in Funchal, given to the hospital by King Manuel in 1514, and another at Quinta dos Reis, Monte, built in 1554.

It stood near the old hospital of the Misericórdia (Holy House of Mercy, a lay charitable brotherhood), when the hospital was housed in a building in the street known as Hospital Velho and later as Santo António. In 1514 King Manuel I gave it to the hospital of this city.

A chapel of the same name exists at the Quinta dos Reis (‘the kings’ estate’), in the parish (freguesia) of Monte (‘hill’); it was built by order of Duarte Mendes de Vasconcelos in 1554. See Reis Magos (chapels).

Chronology
  • The Misericórdia of Funchal was founded and King Manuel gave the hospital and the chapel of the Holy Kings to it.
  • Duarte Mendes de Vasconcelos built the Chapel of the Magi at Quinta dos Reis, Monte.
