Our Lady of Salvation (chapels)

Original title: Nossa Senhora da Salvação (Capelas de)

Describes two chapels of Our Lady of Salvation: a ruined one at Moinhos, Caniço, founded in 1614, and one in Funchal.

Map: Madeira (4)

In the locality (sítio) of Moinhos (‘mills’), in the parish (freguesia) of Caniço (‘reed’), on land belonging to the Figueiroa de Albuquerque family, the ruins of the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Salvação can still be seen; we have read somewhere that it was founded in 1614 by Francisco Morais de Aguiar. In Funchal there was a chapel of the same name, ‘in a yard of their houses where they live at the fountains’, built by João de Bettencourt Henriques and his wife Dona Antónia de Castelbranco.

Chronology
