Overview of the ferns of the Madeira archipelago: 45 species, 41 native, with commonest examples and reference works; ends with an unrelated stray bibliographic item.
Forty-one native ferns and 4 naturalised ones are known in the Madeira archipelago; these 45 species comprise 1 Cyatheacea, 3 Hymenophyllaceae, 40 Polypodiaceae and 1 Ophioglossacea. Of the 40 Polypodiaceae, 36 are native and 4 naturalised. Dicksonia culcita, Herit. (feto abrum), is a beautiful Cyatheacea that is common only in the Montado dos Pessegueiros (‘peach-tree pasture’); Davallia canariensis (cabrinha), Adiantum reniforme, Pteris arguta, Pteridium aquilinum (bracken), Woodwardia radicans (feto de botão), Athyrium Filix-foemina, Asplenium Adianthum-nigrum, Polystichum aculeatum, Nephrodium Filix-mas, etc. etc., are Polypodiaceae common in Madeira. Montado dos Pessegueiros is a locality in the parish and municipality of São Vicente, Madeira, with lava tubes in modern lava flows. It is one of the two remaining sites of the fern Dicksonia culcita (feto abrum) and the only one where it is frequent. It was suggested as a site, in the Ribeira do Inferno, for growing Cinchona succirubra.
