Ticks

Original title: Carrapatos

Ticks (genus Ixodes) parasitising livestock and dogs, abundant in Madeira's mountain pastures.

Parasitic arachnids of the family Ixodidae, genus Ixodes, which live on sheep, goats and cattle, and sometimes on dogs. Ticks are especially abundant in the mountain pastures of Madeira and are parasitic for only part of their life: for the rest they usually cling to shrubs, bracken and other plants, then pass on to animals and sometimes even to humans. Some parasitic arachnids are also known as carraça or carrasca.
