The Fort of São Francisco in Santa Cruz, built in 1749 by order of the bishop-governor D. Fr. João do Nascimento and paid for with militia fines.

It was built in the town (vila) of Santa Cruz (‘Holy Cross’) by order of the bishop-governor Dom Friar João do Nascimento in 1749, who applied to the work the money from the fines paid by the territorial militia (ordenanças) for failing to perform lookout duty.
