Eduardo Antonino Pestana (b. 1892), Madeiran lawyer, lycée teacher and writer, author of lectures and articles and preparing a study of Madeiran folklore.
He was born in Câmara de Lobos (‘seals’ den’) on 8 September 1892 and graduated in letters in 1918 and in law in 1920 at the University of Lisbon (Universidade de Lisboa); he also completed the course of the Escola Normal Superior (higher teacher-training college) in 1919. He taught at the Pedro Nunes lyceum (state secondary school) in Lisbon, and for some time now has lived in Funchal, where he practises as a lawyer and teaches at the Jaime Moniz lyceum. While in mainland Portugal he contributed to the review Voz da Juventude, in which he wrote a series of thirty articles on syncretism, to the Economista Português, to the Ordem, etc., and since returning to Funchal he has published many articles in the Diário de Notícias and the Comércio da Madeira. Works: A Egreja catolica e os operarios, a lecture given at the ‘Círculo Católico dos Operários’ in Lisbon; Sciencia da Linguagem, a lecture given at the ‘Academia de Estudos Livres’ in Lisbon; and O Estudo do Latim, a thesis presented at the Escola Normal Superior. He is preparing a study of Madeiran folklore (1921).

The capital of the archipelago and seat of the principal captaincy, where settlement began; it was made a vila c.1451–52. Its bay, the widest in the archipelago, lies between Ponta do Garajau and Ponta da Cruz and offers sheltered anchorage, though its harbour had never been studied oceanographically. The Elucidário discusses it as a health resort with climate data and records the January 1906 disturbances, the Danish prince's visit in May 1846 and recent volcanic cones in the area.
