Joaquim Pestana (1840–1909), lyric poet of Câmara de Lobos whose verse appeared in almanacs and newspapers.
He was born in the parish (freguesia) of Câmara de Lobos (‘seals’ den’) on 24 December 1840 and was a distinguished poet. His verse is scattered through several periodicals of Funchal and of the city of Ponta Delgada (‘slender point’), and through the annuals Novo Almanach de Lembranças Luso-Brasileiro, Almanach das Senhoras, Almanach Madeirense and Almanach de Lembranças Madeirense. He left in manuscript a book entitled Espinhos e Flores, in which many of his poems published in various almanacs and newspapers are said to be collected.
He died in the parish of Câmara de Lobos on 6 February 1909. The Novo Almanach de Lembranças Luso-Brasileiro, to which he had contributed for 38 years, published a portrait of the ill-fated Madeiran lyric poet, together with a short notice about him.
