School of Useful and Fine Arts

Original title: Escola de Utilidades e Belas Artes

A girls' school of practical and fine arts founded by the Junta Geral in 1913, opened in 1914 in the old Seminary building and closed in 1919.

School of Useful and Fine Arts

It was intended for the education of girls and was established under a resolution of the District General Council (Junta Geral) passed on 12 February 1913; it began operating in February of the following year.

It taught music, painting, drawing, languages, hygiene, gymnastics, dance, needlework, cookery, gardening and horticulture, arithmetic, geography, etc.

The School of Useful and Fine Arts (Escola de Utilidades e Belas Artes) was housed in the building of the former seminary (Seminário) at the Encarnação, and was abolished by resolution of the General Council of 13 September 1919, the building itself having been transferred to that body in August 1919 for the sum of 9 contos (1 conto = 1,000,000 réis, from 1911 1,000 escudos). Since September of that year the offices of the General Council have been housed there.
