Funchal-born infantry captain decorated for bravery in France in the First World War, captured in April 1918, and elected deputy for Funchal in 1919.

He was born in Funchal on 16 December 1881 and, as an infantry captain, served with the Portuguese troops who fought in France alongside the Allies. He was awarded the War Cross and the 3rd class of the Order of the Tower and Sword for acts of bravery during the campaign. Taken prisoner by the Germans in the great battle of 9 April 1918, he did not return to Portugal until early 1919, and was elected deputy for Funchal in the elections held on 11 May of that year.
