Records the brief call at Funchal on 3 April 1921 of General Norton de Matos, High Commissioner of the Republic in Angola, and the official reception given to him.

Norton de Matos (General)

General Norton de Matos, High Commissioner (alto comissário) of the Republic in Angola, called at Funchal on 3 April 1921 aboard the Moçambique. He was greeted on board by the civil governor, the military commander, the secretary-general, etc. After landing he joined the procession of the Unknown Soldier, and then travelled by special train to Terreiro da Luta (‘ground of the fight’), where the deputy Captain Américo Olavo de Azevedo gave a luncheon in his honour, attended also by the civil governor and others.

The return journey was made in Monte sledges (carros do Monte), and the industrialist Henrique Hinton offered tea to all the guests at his residence. The general re-embarked at about half past four, when military honours were paid to General Norton de Matos by an infantry detachment under the command of a captain (1921).
