Harry (Henrique) Hinton was the Madeira-born son of William Hinton and owner of the Torreão factory, whose sugar and alcohol monopoly gave rise to the Hinton question. He lived at the Quinta da Palmeira and was a noted benefactor of Madeira: he gave Zarco's reputed sword to the Funchal Municipal Museum, sponsored the 1930 Portuguese edition of Insulae Materiae and supported the Misericórdia.
