Monte toboggan-cars

The Monte toboggan-cars, which appeared in their present form around 1849 or 1850, replacing small sledges on which visitors sometimes descended from Monte parish.
The Monte (‘hill’) toboggan-cars, in the form they have today, appeared in 1849 or 1850. The travellers who visited Madeira in the first quarter of the 19th century make no reference to these cars in the writings they left us. Before the cars appeared, there were small sledges on which travellers visiting the parish (freguesia) of Monte sometimes descended.
