Original title: Carriço (Phragmites communis)

A grass common on coastal ground, both on Madeira and on Porto Santo. Its stems can sometimes reach 2 metres in height. Frutuoso says that the parish (freguesia) of Caniço derives its name from ‘the land there being covered with a common reed (carriço), like slender canes’.
