Chocalheira (Briza maxima)

Big quaking grass (Briza maxima), a common native fodder grass of Madeira and Porto Santo, with its smaller relative Briza minor.

A native grass, common on Madeira and Porto Santo. It is a fodder plant easily recognised by its large, ovoid spikelets, white or reddish. The chocalheirinha (Briza minor) differs from the chocalheira in its very small, triangular spikelets. It too is common on Madeira and in the hills of Porto Santo.
