Azevedo (António Pedro de)
Original title: Azevedo (Antonio Pedro de)
Military engineer, long director of Public Works in the Funchal district, who surveyed the charts of Porto Santo, Madeira and the Desertas in 1842–43 with officers of HMS Styx.
He was born in Caminha on 7 February 1814 and first visited Madeira at the time of the usurpation, when he was a second lieutenant of infantry. After completing the engineering course following the restoration of the Charter, he returned to this island, where for many years he held the post of director of Public Works of the District. In 1842 and 1843, together with the officers of the British steam warship Styx, he surveyed the charts of Porto Santo, Madeira and the Desertas, published in 1877, 1879 and 1886 respectively. He died in Lisbon on 10 August 1889, by then a retired divisional general.
