Establishment of the port
Original title: Estabelecimento do Porto
Explains the tidal 'establishment of the port' and gives Funchal's value: high water at spring tides at 12h48', with a range of 2.28 m.
At the syzygies, high water does not coincide with the moon’s passage across the meridian, because the waters go on rising after that passage by virtue of the momentum they have acquired. The establishment of the port (time of high water at full and new moon), or the time of high water at spring tides, is 12h48' at Funchal, according to the chart of General António Pedro de Azevedo, and the tidal rise is 2m, 28.
