British naval captain who, commanding HMS Styx in 1842–43, surveyed Madeira, Porto Santo and the Desertas and produced a chart published in 1843.

He visited the Madeira archipelago in 1842 and 1843 aboard the steamer Styx, which he commanded. He was responsible for surveying a chart of the islands of Madeira, Porto Santo and the Desertas, published in 1843. Captain Vidal, of the British Royal Navy, was greatly assisted in his work by the engineer captain António Pedro de Azevedo. See Maps.
