Berkeley Cotter (J.C.)
Portuguese geologist J. C. Berkeley Cotter, author of a note on Tertiary fossils of the Madeira archipelago, based on material supplied by Padre Ernesto Schmitz; he died in 1919.
In the offprint of the Comunicações da Comissão de Trabalhos Geológicos, vol. II, fasc. II, a study was published with the following title: Noticia de alguns fosseis terciarios do archipelago da Madeira by J. C. Berkeley Cotter, accompanied by another note on some fossil land molluscs of the same archipelago by Alberto A. Girard. The preface to this work reads as follows: ‘The materials submitted for our examination are not sufficient to determine precisely the subdivision of the stratigraphic system to which the deposits containing them belong; but they serve, we believe, to confirm in general the conclusions reached by the learned Zurich professor (Karl Mayer) that the fossiliferous strata of the island of Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’) and neighbouring islands, which Thomas Edward Bowdich had already identified as Tertiary in 1823, belong to the Helvetian stage, though the possibility should not be excluded that part of these deposits belongs to the Tortonian, or higher stage of the Miocene system.’ The materials mentioned in the passage of the preface quoted above were supplied by the Revd Father Ernst Schmitz, then a professor at the Funchal Seminary (Seminário do Funchal). Berkeley died in December 1919.

- Funchal Seminary
Funchal. Where Padre Schmitz taught.
The Seminário do Funchal is the diocesan seminary in Funchal. Among those who studied there were Manuel Pestana dos Reis, Padre José Gonçalves de Aguiar and the poet Francisco Álvares de Nóbrega, who was expelled. Padre Ernesto Schmitz taught there, became vice-rector and founded a museum, which Padre Jaime de Gouveia Barreto, a former student and teacher, later directed.
- Porto Santo
Island whose fossil-bearing beds are discussed in Cotter's study.
An island of the archipelago, settled alongside Madeira and forming one of the three captaincies. It has always constituted a single parish, dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Piedade, whose church was repeatedly sacked. The Elucidário records the Moorish pirate raid of 1617, its own Misericórdia and a rainwater channel built on this drought-prone island.
- Zurich
Switzerland. City where Karl Mayer was professor.
Zurique (Zurich) is the city where Karl Mayer was a professor. The Marquis de gli Albizzi's guide to Madeira was published there in 1891.
