Bowdich (T. E.)

T. E. Bowdich, English naturalist who visited Madeira in October 1823 and whose posthumous book described the islands' natural history.

English naturalist and traveller who was in Madeira in 1823, staying from 14 to 26 October. The results of Bowdich’s studies of the fauna, flora, geology and meteorology of Madeira and Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’) are set out in a work published only after his death, entitled Excursions in Madeira and Porto Santo, during the autumn of 1823 (London, 1825). This work, curious for many reasons but containing many inaccuracies, was translated into French and published in Paris in 1826. Bowdich died on 10 January 1824.
