Pinto (Dean Dr João Joaquim)
Original title: Pinto (Dr. Deâo João Joaquim)
Biography of Dr João Joaquim Pinto (1851–1919), a priest born in Porto Moniz who became canon and dean of Funchal Cathedral, taught at the Funchal seminary and several times governed the diocese. He also edited the newspaper A Verdade and wrote on ecclesiastical law and the Gospel of St Matthew.
He was born in the parish (freguesia) of Porto Moniz (‘Moniz’s harbour’) on 4 March 1851. He was a bachelor (bacharel, university graduate) in theology from the University of Coimbra (Universidade de Coimbra), completing his degree in 1879, and in that same year he was ordained priest. He was teaching at the Archiepiscopal Seminary of Évora (Seminário Arquiepiscopal de Évora) when, in 1888, he was presented to a canonry of Funchal Cathedral (the Sé) (Sé do Funchal), and he was later raised to the office of dean of the same Cathedral. Here in Madeira he was professor and vice-rector of the Seminary, vicar-general and on several occasions governor of the diocese (governador do bispado, administering the see in the bishop's absence). He also carried out other duties, such as president of the Administrative Committee (Comissão Administrativa) of the Holy House (Santa Casa, the Misericórdia), etc.
He was a man of wide learning and great application to study, especially versed in theological subjects, which he taught with distinction. To his gifts of intellect he joined a great austerity of character, which earned him the regard and esteem of his fellow countrymen.
He was editor of the newspaper A Verdade and published Documentos para o subsídio ao estudo do direito civil ecclesiastico portugues, 1894, 2 vols of 379 and 537 pp., and Evangelho de S. Mateus, 1901, 136 pp. He died in this city on 11 February 1919.
