Salema Vaz
Salema Vaz was a poet deported to Madeira in 1919 and held at the Gonçalo Aires lazaretto; his exile verses were published as Pão do Exílio in 1921.
Among the political deportees who came to this island in 1919 and were interned in the buildings of the Lazareto de Gonçalo Aires (‘Gonçalo Aires quarantine hospital’) was the poet Salema Vaz. In 1921 he published in Lisbon, in a fine edition, a volume of verse entitled Pão do Exílio, Escrito que foi durante o desterro e seu caminho da Ilha da Madeira, cidade do Funchal, no ano MCMXIX, Lisbon, 1921, 134 pp. The poems in this volume were written from the voyage and departure from Lisbon for Madeira onwards and during the author’s exile on this island, and contain many references to various Madeiran people and things (1922).

The capital of the archipelago and seat of the principal captaincy, where settlement began; it was made a vila c.1451–52. Its bay, the widest in the archipelago, lies between Ponta do Garajau and Ponta da Cruz and offers sheltered anchorage, though its harbour had never been studied oceanographically. The Elucidário discusses it as a health resort with climate data and records the January 1906 disturbances, the Danish prince's visit in May 1846 and recent volcanic cones in the area.

The Lazareto de Gonçalo Aires is a quarantine building at the mouth of the Ribeira de Gonçalo Aires, decreed in 1849. It was turned into a plague isolation hospital and sacked by rioters on 7 January 1906. It was later used to intern political deportees, including those of 1919, and German residents during the Great War.
