Islets
Original title: Ilhéus
A list of the main islets off the coasts of Madeira and Porto Santo, and in the Desertas group, each with the parish it lies near. It serves as an index to their individual entries.
The main islets off the coast of Madeira are, on the south coast: Agostinho, Desembarcadouros and de Fora (Ponta de São Lourenço), Santa Catarina (Santa Cruz), Ilhéu (bay of Funchal), Gorgulho and Praia (São Martinho), Campanário or Lapa (Campanário) and Guincho (Ponta do Pargo); and on the north coast, those of Porto Moniz, called Mole and Negro (Porto Moniz), those of Ribeira da Janela (Ribeira da Janela), those of Seixal, known as Ceroulas and Guincho (Seixal), those of Boaventura, or Preto and Vermelho (Boaventura), São Jorge (São Jorge), Rocha do Navio (Santana), those of Faial, the chief of which is the Ilhéu do Faial (Faial), and Porto da Cruz (Porto da Cruz). See those entries. The main islets surrounding the island of Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’), not far from its coast, are these: the Ilhéu das Cenouras, the Ilhéu de Baixo or da Cal, the Ilhéu de Cima or dos Dragoeiros, today also called the Ilhéu do Farol, the Ilhéu de Fora or Rocha do Nordeste, the Ilhéu da Fonte or Fonte da Areia, and the Ilhéu de Ferro (see each of these entries).
In the Desertas group lies the islet of Furilhão or Prego do Mar (see those entries), also known as the Ilhéu do Navio.

Funchal
Ilhéus is an area of Funchal where Júlio Dinis briefly lived in a house. The Elucidário's entry of that name is a list of the main islets off Madeira, Porto Santo and the Desertas.
- Desertas
Santa Cruz. Island group containing the Furilhão.
An island group near Madeira that was already separated from it at the last eruptions and shares endemic species with it. It was the main orchil-harvesting area, and Wollaston found 89 beetle species there. The islands were investigated by scientific expeditions, including the Endurance scientists in 1914.
- Furilhão
Desertas. Islet of the Desertas, also called Prego do Mar or ilhéu do Navio.
Sea stack 49 m high in the Desertas, near Ilhéu Chão, also called Prego do Mar or ilhéu do Navio and known to English sailors as Sail Rock. It is said to have been shelled by a British frigate.
- Ilhéu da Fonte
Porto Santo. Islet off Porto Santo.
Islet off Porto Santo that has its own endemic snail forms.
- Ilhéu das Cenouras
Porto Santo. Islet off Porto Santo.
Small islet off Porto Santo, near Ponta Branca or do Nordeste.
- Ilhéu de Baixo
Porto Santo. Islet off Porto Santo, also called da Cal.
The Ilhéu de Baixo, also called Ilhéu da Cal, is an islet off the southern tip of Porto Santo, separated from Calheta by a narrow channel and marking the western limit of the bay of Porto Santo. For centuries it supplied all the limestone burnt for lime in Madeiran building; the Elucidário also notes its Miocene fossil-bearing limestone and fossil snails, caves, rabbits, a wine boat lost there in 1790, and its use as the Porto Santo end of the Travessa for distance measurements.
- Ilhéu de Cima
Porto Santo. Islet off Porto Santo, also called dos Dragoeiros or do Farol.
The Ilhéu de Cima, also called Ilhéu dos Dragoeiros or do Farol, is an islet east-south-east of Porto Santo marking the eastern extreme of the archipelago and the eastern limit of Porto Santo bay. A lighthouse was installed there in 1900 at 118 m above sea level, with a quay for its staff. A living Helix Lowei was found there, deep-water shells occur nearby, and it was recommended in 1903 for tuna traps.
- Ilhéu de Ferro
Porto Santo. Islet off Porto Santo.
Ilhéu de Ferro is a small islet off the south-west of Porto Santo. It is separated from the island by a narrow channel and is 115 m high.
- Ilhéu de Fora
Machico. Islet off the Ponta de São Lourenço.
The Ilhéu de Fora, also called Ilhéu do Farol, is the outermost islet off the Ponta de São Lourenço and the easternmost point of Madeira, 107 m high. It has carried a lighthouse since September 1870 and has a telegraph station linked to Funchal and a quay serving the lighthouse staff. It marks the Madeira end of the Travessa do Porto Santo and is the starting point of the channels measured in the archipelago.
