Gorgulho (locality and islet)
Original title: Gorgulho (Sítio e Ilhéu do)
A coastal locality and islet west of Funchal in São Martinho, with a ruined fort, notable lava flows and a municipal seawater pool built in 1932.
A coastal locality (sítio) west of the city, in the parish (freguesia) of São Martinho, where there was once a small fort, now in complete ruin.
Gorgulho (‘weevil’) is of geological interest because of the lava flows that can be seen beside this fort.
There is an iron stairway and an inclined plane there, built by order of the Wilson Company.
In 1932 the Funchal Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal do Funchal) had a public pool for bathing and swimming built at this locality, supplied with seawater.
At this locality, a short distance from the shore, lies a small islet named Gorgulho.
