Article Nº 1126 Headland or cape Funchal Vol. I · p. 644

Cruz (point)

Original title: Cruz (Ponta da)

A headland in São Martinho regarded as the western limit of Funchal bay, once site of a small redoubt and near a fish-canning factory.

Map: Madeira (5)

A little to the east of Praia Formosa (‘beautiful beach’) and to the west of the Ilhéu do Gorgulho (‘weevil islet’), on the coast of the parish (freguesia) of São Martinho (‘St Martin’), lies the so-called Ponta da Cruz (‘point of the cross’), which many regard as the western limit of the bay of Funchal. A small redoubt once stood there; it is now dismantled. In its vicinity there is an important fish-canning factory.
