Lava flows

Original title: Correntes de Lava

Describes notable lava flows at Porto Moniz on Madeira's north coast and at Gorgulho near Funchal, the former illustrated in Charles Lyell's geology textbook.

At Porto Moniz, on the north coast of Madeira, and at Gorgulho (‘weevil’), near Funchal, there are lava flows of very curious appearance. The Porto Moniz flows, a drawing of which appears in Charles Lyell’s Elements of Geology, look particularly recent. One of them forms a mass bristling with jagged points that extends beyond the coastline. The Gorgulho lavas lie on the shore, close to the spot where a small fort once stood, and contain various hollows in which seawater collects.
