Charles Lyell was an English geologist who explored Madeira's geology in the winter of 1853–54 with Hartung. His Elements of Geology discussed the island, including a drawing of the Porto Moniz lava flows and the view that the Curral das Freiras is an erosion valley rather than a crater.
